How does an engine actually work

I'm always going on about 0-60 figures and top speeds but how does a car achieve this numbers. I can tell you straight away that admittedly I know almost nothing about how an engine runs so rather than me explaining rather poorly I've added a diagram to explain to you and I how it works:
